Session 10: Roundtable - Access to Education Abroad for All: Serving Students with Autism, Anxiety & More
As the number of students with anxiety, autism and other diagnoses increases on college campuses, higher education professionals must adapt and refine their practices in order to ensure equitable access to education abroad programs. In keeping with the inclusivity theme of this year’s CIEE Summit, we will explore the challenges and identify possible solutions for supporting neuro-diverse students who wish to study abroad.

In this session, we will share a model faculty-led program designed to accommodate the needs of autistic students. We will also delve into challenges faced by study abroad offices, disability offices, and providers when attempting to provide appropriate support and at the same time respect privacy.

Topics to be addressed include:

1) effective outreach to and engagement with these population of students

2) how to evaluate potential study abroad sites and program features with neurodiversity in mind

3) crafting a Universal Design approach to learning for study abroad programming. Input will be solicited from the audience with the goal of a robust roundtable discussion on this timely topic.
